It is there that he falls in love with a sleek, sporty, light blue Lancia. However, Herbie's attention is also sought after by a gang of jewel thieves who have hidden a stolen gem in his gas tank! This sets off a madcap chase across the French countryside that only The Love Bug could create!
The film was shot on location in France en route to Monte Carlo and in Paris at the Esplanade du Trocadero, Eiffel Tower, Place de la Concorde, Place Vendome, Place d'Iena, Arc de Triomphe, and down the Champs-Elysees -- all filmed at an exhilarating 80 miles an hour!
In a quirky detail, Herbie's passport is stamped in the opening scene. Disney had to apply for a passport for Herbie, and the Los Angeles State Department suggested that they go to the German embassy for a German passport since Herbie is a Volkswagen. Eventually, the Studios were granted a genuine U.S. passport for Herbie.
When Herbie's passport is stamped, his vital statistics are revealed - he's 5 feet tall with sealed beam eyes and a sunroof for hair! This adds to his charismatic and endearing personality.
